The Ferndale Strangler
Coming up in April - A Review

Below is an article from Shortland Street website - with my thoughts included.

“COMING UP IN APRIL: It’s April on Shortland Street - so take a look ahead at some of the month’s big stories “

It starts with a headache that rapidly deteriorates into a blinding migraine for one of Shortland Street’s most loved characters.

Okay just a word of advice, the idea that a character develops a ‘headache’ isn’t exactly enthralling.

Luckily, working in a hospital means there are plenty of doctors around to seek an opinion from.

Yep, lucky. There’s no way to hide symptoms of ‘headache’ either so they doctors are probably demanding they get a check up.

But this month when one of the staff of Shortland Streetneeds a medical consultation they get fobbed off by Dr Brooke Freeman, who thinks she has more important things to deal with.

More important than a headache!? How could she possibly think that!

Soon after that person is found collapsed in the lift and rushed to the nearest ward.

Horrified to realise her mistake, Brooke Freeman works hard to save her patient’s life.

What? Brooke’s the only one qualified to administer Panadol?

Will Brooke’s lack of care see her end up with a staff member’s blood on her hands?

Blood? What sort of a headache is this?.  No.

When Chris invited his cousin Isaac Worthington to stay at his posh home, he didn’t realise he was inviting a nest of trouble.

A nest of trouble? So is Isaac the bird? If so did he construct the nest before transporting it in to Chris’s home. I think they mean, Chris has invited the opportunity for a troublesome bird to create a nest of trouble within his home.

As April progresses, Isaac continues to cement the playboy image which Chris himself used to own.

Just because the producers keep trying to push the image that Isaac is a ‘playboy’ it doesn’t stop him being about as heterosexual as Gerald

Since his rejection by party-girl Tania Jeffries, Isaac has been playing the field.

However, the handsome doc does have a soft spot for Chris’ son Harry, and offers to look after him when Chris is called to work.

Wait, his saving grace is a soft spot for Harry? Yikes

But just as Harry manipulates Isaac into letting him drink beer, a shocked Chris arrives back.

Disturbed, Chris wonders what sort of example Isaac is setting for his impressionable son.

After some stern words, Chris feels he has Isaac back on track - until Isaac brings his next conquest home! And this lady is someone who is well known to both Chris and Harry.

Yvonne…….?

Who’s sharing an awkward breakfast with the Warners’ this month? Stay tuned to find out!

Please god let it be Yvonne

April brings challenges for popular med student Hunter McKay.

Popular? He doesn’t appear to have any friends. Oh wait that guy who burnt himself at a party and hit him up for some bandaging. So popular = one friend.

When his attempt to help an HIV positive junkie backfired and he was stuck with a dirty needle, his whole future changed.

Now on anti-HIV medication, Hunter’s life is in limbo until the final results come back.

Still working as an ambo? Is anyone else troubled? And they wouldn’t let Magic ball……….

This month, Hunter’s health rapidly deteriorates. Convinced he might be developing the virus, a weak and nauseous Hunter struggles to keep up with his med school assignments.

Faced with failing his course, Hunter realises a solution to his problem is staring him in the face.

Using the internet, he can pay someone else to complete his assignments for him.

Yep staring him in the face. You pretty much can’t get through 5 minutes on facebook without someone offering to do your New Zealand Med School assignments for cash.

Will the normally honest Hunter take this desperate route and cheat to compete?

Who cares

Recently returned from honeymoon, you’d think Sophie and Kieran Mitchell would be basking in that newlywed glow - but they’re not back in Ferndale long before Sophie uncovers more evidence that her new hubby has been keeping secrets.

Helping out with the I.V Bar accounts, Sophie finds funds that seem to have been paid to an unknown bank account.

Confronting Kieran with the information, he is forced to admit more of his dodgy dealings.

Appalled by what she discovers, Sophie is forced to make a decision about the man she loves.

Don’t marry some creep double your age. Also try and marry someone straight.

Cop turned Nurse, Tracey Morrison is seemingly happy to have her big brother Doug in town this month, but her joy at being reunited with him soon turns to worry.

During his stay, Tracey picks up on some uncharacteristic and secretive behaviour from Doug, who brushes it off as the stress of an impending trial.

His furtive behaviour isn’t lost on ex-army man Scotty either, who starts to suspect that Doug might not be the upright and honest cop Tracey believes him to be.

Scotty’s ex-army so he can tell a dodgy cop when he sees one. He’s ex army.

But the more Scotty digs, the more opposition he meets from Tracey, and the more he risks jeopardising their close bond.

Which was jeopardised when Scotty tried to root her.

When Doug’s actions put not only himself, but Tracey and the other staff at Shortland Street in serious danger, Tracey is forced to realise that Doug may have created a situation that even he can’t handle.

Family loyalties are put to the test and Tracey is forced to make one of the toughest decisions of her life.

Meanwhile, fresh from a round of budget cuts and staff redundancies, hospital 2IC Rachel McKenna must find more ways to slash spending at
Shortland Street this month.

As directed by the DHB, Rachel pores over departmental accounts and finds a potentially significant place to save costs - the Primary Care Clinic.

Working the numbers, Rachel realises how much CEO Callum McKay’s ‘pet project’ has been costing.

Rachel rationalises that the PCC’s services can easily be met by community General Practitioners, but at what cost to hospital morale?

What so the 2 staff that work at the PCC

Closure would see hospital favourite Sarah Potts and her offsider Brooke Freeman out in the cold.

Worried that even by her standards it will be an unpopular step, Rachel fudges on the report, all while the DHB pressures her for an answer.

Could the hatchet-woman finally be having an attack of conscience?

The hatchet-woman who hasn’t actually made any cuts.

Will she stand up to the DHB or will she follow orders - sabotaging her personal happiness with Callum in the process?

We all know Bloomfield is going back behind the camera ASAP.

Mid Week News Alert

So apparently due to Easter Weekend, tonight’s episode is the final for the week.

Bullshit.

If anything there should be a bonus episode. Maybe the first episode of Yvonne and Ben: After Dark Detectives?

Plus we all know nothing good is going to happen tonight, they’ll keep us waiting for Monday when clearly they will rehire, two of, if not all of the admin staff MegaKenna sacked yesterday. Although maybe some leave would allow Yvonne to focus on her new role as director of The Ferndale Players present Paul Holmes

Yep, Pauly is making a cameo in the production. Personally I’m stoked. But wait, should Ben be worried about this suave new man on the scene?

Meanwhile apparently Faye Smith, who plays Tania, is up for auction……well a date with her is (http://www.oxfamcoffeebreak.org.nz/).

I wonder if she’s stoked to be pulling in less money than this guy:

Yep, that’s restaraunter, Steve Logan. What you didn’t recognise him?

So, this week I guess is just a write off, but look out next week!

Hopefully Gerald, Libby and Yvonne will all be safe at Shortland Street, if not I’m going to have to send a few harsh emails.

What 3 characters would you cut if you had the option?

I’d cut Daniel’s gf, Mya and Harry

LiveBlog Monday 29/3/2010

Monday night,

7.03 - Yvonne is showing a little skin tonight. Mainly upper arm. I’ll take what I can get though.

7.04 - Yuck. TK and Brooke are cringeworthy. Least believable couple since Shanti/Scotty

7.06 - Ben and Yvonne on the other hand………..genuine chemistry.

7.07 - Shoot, marry, kill out of Yvonne, Libby, Gerald?

7.10 - Ad break 1. Not great so far, too much focus on the two worst storylines - Tracy’s cop career and the firing. What, are the Morrison’s meant to be some sort of super race of crime fighters? And really as long as it isn’t Yvonne who gets fired I could care less. There’s no more doctors for Libby to shack up with, so I’m picking she’ll go.

7.14 Here we go, back in to it. This creep director better lay off Yvonne, she’s got a lot on her plate. Finally their giving us what we want to see, the Ferndale players.

7.16 …..and coincidentally, Maxwell suddenly asks TK about his study, and then turns him down. Wait for Brooke to get involved, and then Potts v. Freeman.

7.17 anyone got a count on how many times ‘the force’ is getting dropped. Enter Callum, necking wines in front of the alco Rachel. Shortland Street really enforces one principle. If you support someone when they are vulnerable and weak, they will eventually fall for you.

7.18 Yvonne is getting fired up at that woman from the Ferndale players. Now she’s flipped that shit, put the shoulder out to get cried on. Is there anything Mumma Jeffries can’t do? BTW, turns out she was only flirting with Ben to get her hubby, that crazy director, jealous.

7.20 Tracey’s brother recalling his night out: “bring me the good stuff and don’t hang about”. Yuck who is this greaser. Where’s he getting this bling from? Somethings dodgy here. Now he’s asking her to meet him for some ritzy lunch.

7.21 Libby’s a goddess.

Ad break 2. This ep isn’t getting much better.

7.26 I thought a-sexuals were meant to be able to colour-coordinate? “Survivor Shortland Street” - amazing idea Gerald. Let’s get filming.

7.27 Oh god. Daniel and his girlfriend are terrible. Her more than him. I get it, she did speech and drama, shot, I can almost see her thinking “go slowly, speak clearly”. It only elongates the cringe worthy scenes she’s in.

7.29 OMG. ULTIMATUM. Callum to Rachel: Choose one admin staff member to sack. Today.

7.30 There’s no justice in the world. Moments after standing up to the MegaMcKenna Yvonne gets the cut from the Ferndale Players.

Pretty average episode. I’m looking forward to a resolution over this admin staff carry on. Also looking forward to Ben “thumping” the Director Ruben for messing with his bitch.

Yours truly

Mitchell to quitchell? (or Rickitt to quit-it, if you like that one better)

Well apparently no, it’s the writers’ decision. But still this is huge news!

http://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/tv/3518040/Explosive-departure-for-Rickitt

I’m pretty surprised about to hear this. But don’t worry, sounds like my man A-Ricks has plenty in the pipeline. Some more believable than others.

“Rickitt said he already had several projects lined up post- Shortland Street including a reintroduction to his pop star life with a British-produced dance music single, a movie and TV series in Los Angeles, a small TV production in New Zealand, and the possibility of coming back to Shortland Street as a director.”

My money’s on small production in NZ. Actually was shoplifting in there at all?

Safe bet is on him pulling a Karl Burnett; spending all his cash and being exiled to Taranaki.

Hopefully this storyline will live up to its hype.

PS Sid you later?

17 years ago, I acquired the holy grail of the Kiwi child, a 7.30pm bedtime.

17 years ago I became a Shortland Street fan.

While I might have started watching Shorty only because I could, I watch now out of love. Love for the smiling faces of the characters I adore, the emotional highs and lows that come every year and every episode, love for Shortland Street hospital.

I watch for -to quote that angelic voice that welcomes me every night -a chance to dream.

I dream of characters past; Dr Craig Valentine (RIP - if he is really dead that is), Lionel (ditto), original Harry Warner (FYI if you’re under the age of 3 and you spend any time in Italy, you will come back as some sort of ratty 12 year old).

I dream of the excitement the future has to offer, and mysteries that will, inevitably unravel. Burning questions await their answers; will Brooke ever be able to truly satisfy Hercules Maui-incarnate TK? Will anyone ever confront Hunter about his excessive use of blush/rouge? Will anyone ever DNA test the Jeffries sisters (I mean come on, they’re 3 different races right?)

I invite you to dream with me, as I share my Shortland Street experience.

I will be updating regularly with the additional treats of live-episode blogging and a bi-weekly Shortland Street Spotlight, where I will delve in to an individual character.

Also keep a eye out for some scripts of BFF-RIES - my spin off idea featuring Ben and Yvonne as a sexy Private Eye team, exposing the underbelly of Ferndale night life.

Yours truly,

Major Neilson.

Welcome to the Ferndale Strangler

Hello and welcome to a new blog, dedicated entirely to New Zealand’s top drama Shortland Street. Shortland Street is a quality television show which has been on air since 1992, and has played a defining role in New Zealand culture.

This blog will provide up to date commentry on the latest storylines, actors and themes as well as discussions over the triumphs and tragedies that have occured in older episodes.

2010 has already provided some great drama and storylines with some beautiful relationships being formed, such as the love that has developed between Ben and Yvonne. The return of Rachael Mckenna has also played a big part in Shortland Street this year, and her determined nature has resulted in major distruptions between characters, as well as some major changes in the hospital with Yvonne, Libby and Gerald’s jobs being on the line.

Other storylines include Sophie and Keirans relationship, which was intertwined with the death of Morgan at the end of 2009 and the arrival of Kierans brother Sid/Sean. The split between TK and Sarah was a sad event, but now it seems they have both moved on.

The quality of acting has remained at the same level, with some beautiful cringe worthy moments sprinkled through many episodes, which always makes for great viewing! Stay tuned for live updates, predictions, and up to date in depth commentry of New Zealand’s favourite drama.
